Three people died this week in a freak car accident when a small airplane crashed in a parking lot near an airport in Houston, Texas. According to Houston Fire Department spokesperson Jay Evans, the plan crashed at around 1:00 in the afternoon into a car parked at a hardware store located close to Hobby Airport in the southeast section of Houston.
For now, officials believe no one was inside the car at the time of the accident. Fire Captain Ruy Lozano said the three people killed were the pilot and passengers in the plane. He adds the plan missed the hardware store building and did not cause a fire or fuel spill. According to Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Lynn Lunsford, the aircraft, a single-engine Cirrus SR-22 plane, was trying to land at Hobby Airport when it crashed at the hardware store, just less than a mile from the airport.
FAA registry records show the aircraft was registered to Safe Aviation LLC based in Moore, Oklahoma. Company representatives couldn’t be reached for comment on the accident. Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, the lead investigators of the accident, are still trying to identify the cause of the crash.
