Jose Daniel Barraza, a border patrol agent, was killed in a violent road accident after his Ford F-150 truck crashed into the rear of an 18-wheeler on the westbound lanes of Interstate 10. Barraza was reportedly on his way home after his midnight shift. In a statement, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske said he was saddened to hear of the Barraza’s death.
A canine handler, Barraza was killed with his canine partner, Vino. He was assigned to the Border Patrol’s Sierra Blanca station. A DPS spokesperson announced that according to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred as Barraza’s Ford truck was traveling behind the 18-wheeler, when all of the sudden, the border agent’s truck rammed into the semi’s rear. Both vehicles came to a stop on the lanes’ shoulder.
Barraza is survived by his wife, Donna, and two boys. Barraza’s wife issued a media statement, saying: “I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. He was an amazing father, husband, son, brother and friend. Those who knew him would tell you how much pride he had in being an agent. He will be loved and missed greatly. At this time, we ask for privacy.”
