May 4th, 2023: An SUV Believed to Be Involved in Human Trafficking Crashes into Semi-Tanker Truck on US Highway 57
Two unidentified people were the victims of a crash involving an SUV and a semi-tanker truck on U.S. Highway 57. The black SUV was speeding away from police officers when it crashed into a semi-tanker truck. Police officers responding to the accident pronounced two unidentified men dead at the scene. Furthermore, they believed the unidentified men were also undocumented immigrants.
The drivers of the black SUV and the semi-tanker truck went to a trauma hospital in San Antonio following the accident.
May 3rd, 2023: Multi-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 35 at Toepperwein Forces Road Closure
Northbound lanes in the city of Schertz had to be closed temporarily due to a multi-vehicle accident. The multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 at Toepperwein early in the morning of May 3rd involved a box truck and two other vehicles.
No one received injuries due to the multi-vehicle crash. They reopened the roads that had to be closed later that day.
April 21st, 2023: Stalled Truck Destroyed by Passing Train along Tracks at West Murphy and Business Road 2
An already fatal vehicular accident almost became deadlier due to a passing train. Twenty-eight-year-old Jesus Guadalupe Laredo was driving his truck near the train tracks at West Murphy and Business Road 2 before getting involved in an accident with a white minivan driven by eighty-six-year-old John Edward Grube.
Grube failed to yield the right way while turning left. As a result, Laredo crashed into the minivan. Grube died at the scene of the initial crash. The other passenger in the minivan, ninety-year-old Kay Clemens Pries, was rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock to receive treatment.
Laredo’s truck became pushed to the train tracks after the initial crash and then stalled on the tracks, forcing Laredo to leave as the passing train approached. The passing train left the truck destroyed in its wake. Laredo was eventually sent to Medical Center Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.
April 20th, 2023: Tanker Truck Spills Cargo of Liquid Sulfur Following Rollover Accident on a Construction Zone
A tanker truck traveling along I-10 and FM 1518 found itself in a messy situation following a wrong turn. The accident occurred on the morning of April 20th while the driver of a tanker truck carrying liquid sulfur was going through a construction zone near I-10 and FM 1518.
The driver was trying to take a sharp turn, and it caused their truck to roll up on the concrete barrier nearby. The concrete barrier pierced the tank causing the liquid sulfur to spill onto the road and up to 10 gallons of liquid sulfur were spilled by the tanker truck.
The liquid sulfur blanketed the stretch of highway in an unpleasant odor. However, liquid sulfur does not pose a danger to anyone’s health.
April 14th, 2023: An 18-Wheeler Carrying a Large Shipment of Onions Crashes into Dump Truck on I-35 near O’Connor Road
An 18-wheeler carrying a large shipment of onions was involved in a rear-end collision causing its cargo to scatter everywhere. The accident took place just a bit past 2:00 a.m. on the morning of April 14th. It occurred on the northbound lanes of I-35 near O’Connor Road.
The 18-wheeler was moving at high speed before it rear-ended a dump truck. Following the impact, authorities took the truck driver to a local hospital for checking. The driver was said to be in stable condition after the accident. The driver of the 18-wheeler truck emerged from the accident with no injuries.
With onions scattered in different directions across the highway, authorities had to close the road for cleanup. Officials had to deal with the thousands of pounds of onions and the debris and oil that also ended up on the road. Cleanup of the area finished sometime before 8:00 a.m. the same day. The highway was finally opened to the public again at around 9:00 a.m.
Feb 21st, 2023: Dump Truck Moving with Raised Bed Knocks Down Pedro Romero Bridge
One of the recent truck accidents in the San Antonio news featured a dump truck driving around with its open-box bed raised. While driving around, the truck crashed into and subsequently knocked down portions of the Pedro Romero Bridge.
City contractors working on a stretch of road along the 1800 Block of Castroville Road departed from the worksite around 8:37 a.m. on February 21st. The dump truck driver forgot to lower the open-box bed and started to move with it still raised in the air.
The dump truck eventually struck the Pedro Romero Bridge, causing its fencing and concrete pillars to collapse. The debris from the collapsed bridge fell on both the dump truck and the street. Luckily, no injuries stemmed from the collapse of the bridge. In addition, the crash unaffected both ramps leading up to the bridge.
Due to his failure to lower the truck bed, the driver received a citation for “Over Height” and “Striking Bridge/Overpass” and will receive a fine.
Feb 1st, 2023: Driver of 18-Wheeler Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries Following Crash on I-35 South
The driver of an 18-wheeler sustained life-threatening injuries after an accident along I-35 South near the Von Ormy Road exit. The accident took place after 11:30 p.m. on February 1st.
According to the report from News 4 San Antonio, police found the driver of the 18-wheeler stuck between his big rig and a concrete median when they arrived at the scene of the accident. Emergency responders immediately went to cut the driver out of his truck and took him to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The highway had to be shut down until a towing company arrived to remove debris and the truck’s wreckage.
January 17th, 2023: Dump Truck Running a Red Light on North Loop 1604 near I-10 Causes Accident That Claims Two Lives
A tragic accident involving a dump truck and SUV occurred on North Loop 1604 near I-10 on January 17th. The accident happened around 3:22 p.m. when the driver of an 18-wheeler ignored a red light and struck a BMW SUV that was making its way south along the I-10 access road..
The driver of the truck, identified as Jesus Delgado Garcia (25), was not believed to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. The San Antonio police department said the reason why Garcia ran the red light remains unknown. After the crash, Garcia immediately went to the hospital in critical condition. Garcia succumbed to his injuries and died two days later.
John Hayes, the driver of the BMW SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. He was 63. Authorities also said the crash destroyed both vehicles.
January 17th, 2023: Driver Involved in Rollover Accident on Loop 1604 Emerges Unscathed
A motorist traveling along Loop 1604 and Bandera around 2:20 a.m. on January 17th was involved in a rollover accident. Police believe the driver was speeding and eventually lost control of their vehicle, thus causing the crash. The vehicle then struck a cement truck nearby, rolled over, and ultimately caught on fire.
Members of the fire department and police officers went to the scene of the accident. Upon reaching the accident site, the first responders saw the fiery remains of the vehicle. Police believed the driver was dead due to the severity of the crash. However, they were surprised to find the driver alive and unharmed, waiting for them near a grassy median.
San Antonio police conducted a field sobriety test after finding the driver and they detained the driver for a possible DWI after the test.
Jan 5th, 2023: One Dead, Another Injured in Fiery 18-Wheeler Rollover Crash
An 18-wheeler moving along I-35 and heading to the Loop 410 railway was involved in a fatal crash on January 5th. The crash took place in the afternoon. Per the report from KENS 5, police said the driver lost control of the 18-wheeler, thus causing it to flip over and catch on fire.
A local army medic named Travis Powell was near the area when the accident occurred. Powell approached the truck and saw that the driver had gotten out of the 18-wheeler. The driver informed Powell that their partner was still in the vehicle. Powell was yelling out to the other passenger, but there was no response. According to Powell, the truck was already in flames, and he could no longer reach the passenger.
Sadly, the passenger could not escape, and they died due to the crash. The driver sustained minor injuries from the truck rollover accident and received treatment for their minor injuries.
Cell phone video captured at the accident scene showed flames and smoke rising from the remains of the truck. The smoke coming from the accident site was said to be visible for miles.
September 23rd, 2022: Two Dead in Wrong Way Accident on Highway 90 near Cupples Road
A tragic wrong way accident involving an 18-wheeler and a white Nissan Altima on Highway 90 near Cupples Road led to the deaths of two people. The accident occurred on Friday, September 23rd, at around 3:00 a.m.
A white Nissan Altima carrying two passengers was heading east on the westbound lanes of Highway 90. While traveling the wrong way, the Nissan Altima collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. Authorities could not determine why the vehicle moved in the wrong direction before the crash.
The two passengers in the Nissan Altima were Carmen Azucena Corpus (21) and Kevin Horacio Corpus (22). They were both residents of Kirby, Texas.
Police said the driver of the 18-wheeler attempted to avoid the collision by veering into the far left lane of the highway. But, unfortunately, the driver of the Nissan Altima also decided to swerve in that direction. It was unclear if the driver of the 18-wheeler walked away from the collision unharmed.
