Being a San Antonio car accident lawyer, I thought that texting while driving would forever be the poster child against distracted driving. Well, move over texting, there’s a new distraction in town – meet the #drivingselfie.
As many as 1 in 10 teens and young adults now find it popular to take selfies while they are driving, adding the hashtag #drivingselfie to the post, and uploading these images to sites like instagram, facebook, twitter, and snapchat. Some teens have even posted #drivingselfie video while driving or riding on a motorcycle.
Is a Video or Picture Ever Worth a Human Life?
It’s well known that distracted driving puts drivers at risk of serious injury, and in many cases, death. In fact, over the last year there have been numerous teen deaths linked to distracted driving here in Texas. While it may only take a second or two to snap that picture, it only takes a second of inattention to cause a serious accident.
Automobiles, arguably, are one of the most deadly weapons in society…thousands of pounds of metal and gasoline traveling at high velocity, it’s no wonder that automobile accidents are a frequent source of injury and death in Texas, and throughout the nation.
That being said, imagine these “weapons” being entrusted to someone who is distracted…it’s a recipe for disaster. That’s why we think it’s important for concerned teens to take a stand, to spread the word about these types of distractions, and to get involved in advocacy efforts against forms of distracted driving, such as #drivingselfie. Teen involvement is key in my opinion because teenagers are much more likely to care about, and listen to what other teens say rather than what parents or teachers tell them is important.Hang Up & Drive!
