Midland Police and Fire authorities were alerted of an accident that caused the death of one motorcyclist. The other driver and passengers of the other car in the accident, which happened at 9:30 p.m. last night, were reportedly not injured. Authorities have identified the victim as Louie White, age 32, and the other driver, Joseph Lian Blk Thawng.
White was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to his death. He died at the scene. Officials confirmed that Thawng was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. According to Midland spokesperson Sara Bustilloz, the accident was the second motorcycle accident that resulted in a fatality.
Because of these incidents, the city of Midland has pushed for the formation of a motorcyclist awareness month. Bustilloz says the goal is to encourage motorists to watch out for motorcycles whenever they make a turn on the road, and while the recent accident involved an intoxicated motorcyclist, it highlights the importance of being aware of motorcycle riders.
Thawng remains in police custody as of press time. The other occupants in his car were released at the scene of the accident. Because of the relative lack of safety and protective features on motorcycles, riders are often at risk of severe injuries and death when encountering accidents.
